Day in the Life of a Network Administrator

Managing a network these days is far more challenging than it used to be – in the past, networks were smaller and there were a limited number of things you could do with them. With modern tech, though, networks play a far more significant role within a business. They operate on a far higher plane than the original network administrators would have and this, in turn, means that days can be far more varied.

However, a typical network administrator will usually need to:

• Maintain hardware and software throughout the network and on every machine, working with the hardware section of the business to maximize performance and make it as secure as they possibly can
• Implement technology changes and improvements that fit into the overall budget of the business
• Plan and research the security of any computer-related activity that takes place regarding the business, whether it’s just staff using their machine or anything that could potentially be a security threat
• Create plans and managing the technical goals of the business to improve efficiency in the organization
• Develop computer networks and ensure they stay safe and that hackers and threats cannot break through
• Managing the internet and intranet to maximize their level of performance and their usage

The day itself will usually vary quite dramatically, but this makes it easier to truly understand what you will be doing on a regular basis and how your day will typically take shape. With these responsibilities, an administrator is expected to keep the place running smoothly and helping the business stay profitable and at peak performance.

It’s one of the hardest jobs within computing but if you can get here and hold that position you will be paid very well for it; it’s a very rewarding job as well, making life so much easier for other employees! It’s all about being able to manage a variety of tasks on a daily basis as well as come to grips with the overall difficulty and nature of the process – it takes a lot of time and patience to get there, but it can be a really effective career path.
