College Profile: George Washington University

George Washington University

George Washington himself had a vision of a university in the Nation’s capital which would be the benchmark for learning institutions in the United States. He foresaw a place where artists, philosophers and policy makers would be trained to contribute to and lead the new nation. In 1821, Congress created Columbian College (now George Washington University) to fulfill that vision.

The University has three main campuses, Foggy Bottom, Mount Vernon and Ashburn, Virginia. Each has its own look and feel, but all three serve a single purpose, training those who have a vision to lead the nation in their respective fields.

The University established its first doctoral programs and admitted its first female students in 1873, shortly after the Civil War transformed both the school and the Capitol itself. The University was central to research in theoretical physics in the 1930s, culminating in Otto Hahn’s splitting of the atom in 1939.

Today, the University prides itself on the practical experience and aid it gives students who invest in an education from the institution. Students work with experts in their fields to gain hands-on experience and the adjunct faculty have a wealth of knowledge garnered from time spent in, arguably, the world’s most powerful city.

The Ashburn campus is specifically designed for and dedicated to research purposes. The University has nearly 100 research centers where students work with full-time faculty and benefit from corporate and institutional partnerships that lend GWU its reputation as a leading research school.

GWU offers a fixed tuition plan for up to 10 fully enrolled semesters, so students and their families can know exactly what their education will cost, without having to worry about the tuition hikes other students across the country often face.

The University also features more than 200 graduate programs in some 24 major areas of study. Financial aid for students is available and the school houses an Office of Military and Veteran’s Affairs.
