The Best US Colleges in Georgia for Starting Careers
Georgia is home to more than 200 institutions of higher learning. Most of the colleges and universities in the Peach State are located in Atlanta, but other cities have highly ranked institutions as well, including Athens, Macon and LaGrange. Colleges of all sorts are available in Georgia. Many students prefer the public institutions while others speak highly of the private colleges and liberal arts institutions. In addition, some of Georgia’s colleges cater to residents of the state, but several hold national recognition. Following are the best colleges in Georgia.
1. Emory University – Atlanta
Emory University is a nationally ranked, private college, which dates back to 1836. The 630-acre campus supports 7,656 undergraduates and a large body of graduate students studying business, law, medicine, nursing and public health. While the university mandates that all freshman and sophomores live on campus, most juniors and seniors opt to do so as well.
2. Georgia Institute of Technology – Atlanta
Georgia Institute of Technology is a public, urban institution with an undergraduate enrollment numbering more than 14,500 students. The university was founded in 1885, and the 400-acre campus includes six colleges, including the highly ranked College of Engineering and College of Business. Georgia Tech is also known for its NCAA Division I sports teams.
3. University of Georgia – Athens
University of Georgia, founded in 1785, is one of the oldest institutions of higher learning in the state, and it has been highly regarded for several decades. The campus of this public university is 759 acres in size, and undergraduate enrollment in the 2013 school year was 26,259 students. In addition to its acclaimed undergraduate programs, University of Georgia is nationally recognized for its graduate-degree offerings.
4. Spelman College – Atlanta
Spelman College is a private, liberal arts institution that was established in 1881. The small campus is situated on only 39 acres, but the undergraduate student body averages at just over 2,100. Spelman has historically been a college for African-American women, and many programs continue to be geared for this demographic. Several notable people have graduated from Spelman, including the renowned author Alice Walker.
5. Mercer University – Macon
Mercer University is a private, regional school that was established in 1833. The 150-acre campus supports 4,423 undergraduate students in a total of 11 different colleges, the most popular of which is the Stetson School of Business & Economics. Tradition is very important at Mercer University. All first year students have been encouraged to climb the tallest tower on campus to write their names on the wall for the past 100 years, and an annual ceremony is held each year to light the campus Christmas tree.
6. LaGrange College – LaGrange
LaGrange College is private, regional school that was established in 1831. The campus is 120 acres in size, but undergraduate enrollment is usually less than 1,000 students. LaGrange holds the distinction of being the oldest private college in Georgia, and it offers a full range of academic programs, more than 40 student organizations, 10 fraternities and sororities and 16 varsity athletic teams.
