Bio: My name is Haley Velasco and I am a rising senior at Cornell University majoring in Industrial and Labor Relations. I am from Basking Ridge, N.J. and am a “Jersey Girl” at heart. At Cornell, I am the Editor in Chief of The Cornell Daily Sun and hold positions in my sorority, as well as a few other organizations on campus. This summer, I will be interning at USA Today in their Editorial section, which I am really looking forward to.

1. Tell me a little bit about yourself outside of journalism.

I am a rising senior at Cornell who is majoring in Industrial and Labor Relations and minoring in English and Business. On campus, I am the Editor in Chief of The Cornell Daily Sun, as well as one of the Alumni Chairs for my sorority, Alpha Epsilon Phi, in addition to being an ILR peer mentor and a part of Cornell’s senior class campaign for the upcoming year.

2. Why do you work in journalism?

I work in journalism because I really love it. I think that providing quick and accurate news to others is an exciting and a fulfilling task that I have come to call my passion.

3. What kind of stories do you look for from your writers?

Overall, the entire Editorial Board at The Sun look for interesting, accurate pieces that get at the heart of the news that fill the University and our surrounding community.

4. What do you think The Cornell Daily Sun does differently from the rest of College newspapers?

I think that the Cornell Daily Sun is a lot like other college newspapers. However, I think that the news surrounding Cornell and those that populate our campus and the surrounding Ithaca community make what The Sun reports different from other colleges.
